E Song 05:06
All drummers out there This boy is also a drummer Just starting, his hand’s not too good yet She is a singer too, Just learning, her voice is not too good yet Look for a singer for me. Look for a singer for me. Here comes the singer, with baskets full of verses. Here comes the singer, with baskets full of verses. Don’t even try to challenge me, I’m a singer. No one in the whole village can touch me, I’m a singer. Nothing can go wrong, believe me, says the singer. Nothing can go wrong, believe me, says the singer. We have a drum, we have a song. She sings her song, he’s about to play. One of the many village songs. Don’t think you can impress me with just one song. Look high and low, all over the village Search until you find. Hunt everywhere, do what you have to. Go on, search until you find. I wonder, how will he play I wonder, how will she sing

Daywata nat, above the sky, Watching over the great circle of earth Safeguarding all below you I pray to you, and To all the good nats. You have guided us down many way East, west, south, north, through all that we see Left to us with open hand by our forefathers To fulfil our every need Also they have been guided by you I come for your counsel now. Our country, our land Where we were raised, where we have known every stone, for lifetimes May you bring us serene musing in our dreams And awake with spirit refreshed. May our lives be fair, just, peaceful, steady, and abundant. Let us live free from the cruelty of the hu- man world. I take an oath, carried in this water. May our way be clear of all enemies.

Doing well? Peaceful nature Our companion Always this place Always this prayer Brings us together Mount Popa beckons from Taung Kalat Happy... Joyful... Celebrating... Dancing...

Min Nyo Sin 04:08
Three garlands of jasmine, to string tonight I’ve done all of them, and where are you? Stay away, go on, leave me, Min Nyo Sin. Young man, leave me, just go on. Three baskets of rice, to polish up All three are husked now, and where are you? Stay away, go on, leave me, Min Nyo Sin. Young man, leave me, just go on. Three piles of rice husk, to make a fire All three burnt up, and where are you? Stay away, go on, leave me, Min Nyo Sin. Young man, leave me, just go on. The dog sleeps now in the warm ashes Three times already he got up to shake his fur. Stay away, go on, leave me, Min Nyo Sin. Young man, leave me, just go on. The cock which sleeps, in the ridge of the roof Has crowed three times, this night by now. Stay away, go on, leave me, Min Nyo Sin. Young man, leave me, just go on. Young man, leave me, just go on. Go on, go on home The birds are chirping The dawn is breaking Light seeps into the sky The moon and stars One by one Take their leave.

Banya Banya 04:24
Tell me, who is not above what now? Go on, what is still under what now? What plotline is played out where now? Who dares to row past what whirlpool? In what work what isn’t there? When what then, well then what now? If I say what, what will I hear? From what causes will come what now? blah blah blah Everywhere everywhere blah blah blah Everyone everyone blah blah blah Always always Hmmm.... Don’t come telling me blah blah Don’t believe every speech you hear Don’t be victim of every scheme out here Don’t be tired at the end of the day You won’t find rice in every tray Where can I stride and keep my pride? Interrogation in which station? Who dismisses, who reminisces? What are the rules and who are the fools? blah blah blah Everywhere everywhere blah blah blah Everyone everyone blah blah blah Always always Hmmm.... Don’t come telling me blah blah Don’t believe every speech you hear Don’t be victim of every scheme out here blah blah blah blah

We will dance to the sound of the o-zi drum Dance together to the sound of the do- bat drum The great drum, every kind of beat Is that your ambition? Enter the competition? Hey, there’s no need to look far for fun Our song makes us all companions And there’s one festival after another Is that your mission? Enter the competition? “For our valued audience gathered here” All of us shouting out A song to make you happy, a song to bring you luck Driving out in the best carved carts Let’s play, let’s dance, come on Friends all, dance, we’ll all dance Still not tired of Shwe Yo and Daw Moe Let’s play, let’s dance, come on All along the history of our village To perform our music and poetry well In thousands, tens of thousands of drums Our music never gets old.

Yo yi lay, yi lay yo Yo yi lay, yo yi lay Maung Pan Hmway, Maung Pan Hmway Maung Pan Hmway was hunting a hare The country monk saw him there Chase him, chase him, boy, he said But the hare still raced and fled. Maung Pan Hmway will get a tattoo ‘Hold him down, boys!’ he tells the crew As the monk whets the needle keen Our boy hotfoots it down the ravine. Chorus Yo yi lay, yo yi lay Maung Pan Hmway, Maung Pan Hmway 1,2,3,4 Yo yi lay, yi lay yo Yo yi lay, yi lay lay lay lay The dog tears along, chasing the boys The country monk hears the noise ‘Boys, call off the dogs!’ he gave a shout. But too late now, the fangs are out. Maung Pan Hmway buys some trousers Tries them on in the corner rest-house ‘Goose him now boys! Get him, right!’ But, couldn’t get him, trousers too tight. Chorus

In our village the young guys Cut some onions and make them cry. Hey, how silly. hey: way lay: wa: la: wa: la: hey: way lay: wa: la: wa: la: byi. poun tu. byi. poun byi. poun tu. In our town the wind kisses The cheeks of all the young misses. Hey, don’t see any boyfriends. At the country donation festival, we hike to the pagodas but dig turtle eggs on the way. Among the do-pat and o-zi drums playing together, with the bamboo clappers the women have their lipstick on Watch out for your shirts They have drawn patterns in the thanakha on their cheeks The sounds of chanting rise from the village monastery The sun sets to the sounds of generators and tractors.

about

Our first set of songs and visuals created in 2015-2017, during a time of political transition in Myanmar. As new waves of international influence began to wash upon Burmese shores, we explored the tradtional village life through its music, dance and words and created something we call Myanmar Root Music. Armed with a team of musicians and dancers we set out to create a fantastical world where borders dissolve and future and past are constantly at play.
