Many people in Myanmar, irrespective of religion, believe that nat spirits are all aound them. Some are angry spirits of people who have died unjustly. Others are indifferent to the human world. Some must be propitiated if you are to stay on their good side. But other nats are spirits whose purpose is to protect a place, or even the world. These guardian spirits may not always be powerful enough to protect against every threat, but they gain strength from worship and offerings. When making a solemn promise, one may pour water on the earth to carry it to the earth spirits, as witnesses.

Watching over the great circle of earth Safeguarding all below you
I pray to you, and
To all the good nats.

You have guided us down many way
East, west, south, north, through all that we see
Left to us with open hand by our forefathers To fulfil our every need
Also they have been guided by you
I come for your counsel now.

Our country, our land
Where we were raised, where we have known every stone, for lifetimes
May you bring us serene musing in our dreams
And awake with spirit refreshed.
May our lives be fair, just, peaceful, steady, and abundant.
Let us live free from the cruelty of the hu- man world.

I take an oath, carried in this water. May our way be clear of all enemies.
